Every August - September, my inbox fills up with a doubts and question of the same message.
"Sir, which exam is easier, UCEED or NID?"
As a Designer and Design Student, I understand why students ask it. UCEED + NID have limited months, limited money for application fees, and a board exam sitting on your chest. You want someone to tell you where the odds are best. But the question is built on a wrong assumption, and answering it directly would do you a disservice. there is no comparison between UCEED and NID exam, both are designed to test different - different ability of students.
So let me answer a better question instead: which of these exams is actually asking for the thing you are good at?
Before that, though, we need to clear up something that half the internet gets wrong.
These are not different 3 exam for single students
I have read comparison articles this week that compare CEED, UCEED and NID DAT in a single table as if a Class 12 student is choosing between them. That is nonsense, and it confuses aspirants badly. the young writer of prominent coaching should understand that they can't just compare and present all exam to class 12th students.
Here is the actual picture:
- UCEED is for a Bachelor of Design (B.Des). You take it after Class 12.
- CEED is for a Master of Design (M.Des) and PhD programmes. You take it after a bachelor's degree or 4 years diploma.
- NID DAT also known as National Institute of Design- Design Aptitude Test, is the only one of the three that runs both a B.Des and an M.Des track, through the different-different Prelims paper.
So if you are in Class 12 right now or completed class 12 exam, then CEED is not on your menu at all. Your real choice is UCEED vs NID DAT(B.Des). If you are finishing engineering or architecture or a B.Des and want a master's, your real choice is CEED vs NID DAT (M.Des). Nobody is choosing between CEED and UCEED. They are separated by four years of your life.
While I am at it, let me kill a second myth. I keep seeing blogs claim UCEED has "Part A, Part B and Part C." It does not. It has two parts. Full stop. If a site gets the number of sections wrong, do not trust anything else it tells you about the marking scheme either. UCEED exam recently introduced Part B sketching earlier there was only Computer based Choice question, we have seen this transition while preparing our Students for UCEED exam from last 5 years.
What each exam is actually looking from Students or design aspirants.
Forget difficulty, each exam is difficult of you take it seriously, and given amount students appear for it you really need to ahead of 95% of your competitive students. Rather than a student should "Ask what skill each paper is built to detect."
UCEED wants to see how you reason about visual information
UCEED Part A is a two-hour computer-based test worth 200 marks, roughly 57 questions across NAT, MSQ and MCQ formats. It covers visualisation and spatial ability, observation and design sensitivity, environmental and social awareness, analytical and logical reasoning, and language and creativity.
Part B is one hour on paper, 100 marks, two questions of 50 each: one drawing question and one design aptitude question. Total 300 marks in three hours.
The thing students underestimate: Part A has negative marking, and remember Part B is only evaluated if you clear the Part A cutoff. Your meaningful and well presentable sketch is worth zero if the Part-A objective part's marks are below cutoff marks. UCEED is, structurally, an aptitude exam with a drawing round attached, but as from our experience students need to have good iterative sketching, product understanding and should be able to demonstrate Ideas through sketches.
NID DAT wants to see whether you can make something out of nothing
DAT Prelims 2027 is on Sunday, 20 December 2026, offline, across 17 cities. No negative marking.
And here is the detail that should reshape your entire strategy: in the most recent cycle, the Prelims paper had objective Part A and Drawing /Sketching Questions. It was drawing-based offline Pen-Paper based exam. Students found it easy to moderate in difficulty but its lengthly in nature . That is a very different exam environment from UCEED.
The bigger structural difference is what happens next. NID Prelims carries zero weightage in your final merit. It is purely a shortlisting filter. Candidates are called for Mains at roughly 2.5 times the number of B.Des seats, and around 4.5 times the seats per discipline for M.Des. Your rank is then decided entirely by DAT Mains, which is a Studio Test plus a personal interview and portfolio conversation.
Read that again, because it matters more than any syllabus list. At NID, the written exam does not decide your seat. A three-hour studio session and a conversation with faculty do, from our past experience you need to be innovative and need to have convincing power to your faculty, also you should also show spark of learning design and what will you gain if the faculty gives you admission.
CEED wants to see how you think about problems
CEED 2027 is on 17 January 2027, the same day as UCEED. CEED Part A is a one-hour computer-based screening test of 150 marks. It is a composition of MCQ, NAT & MSQ questions. Part B is 100 marks on paper, covering sketching, creativity, form sensitivity, visual sensitivity, and problem identification and solving.
The number every CEED aspirant should understand is your final score is 0.25 × Part A + 0.75 × Part B. Part A exists only to decide whether examiner and reviewer bothers reading your Part B booklet. Three-quarters of your rank comes from the sketching and design-thinking paper. We gave CEED four times in even after graduation from IDC IITB M.des. still many aspirant fail to understand that studying only Part A or objective question will not give you anything, unless you cleared the Part A cutoff. then only your drawing questions will get evaluated.
I have watched capable CEED Aspirant spend four months grinding visual reasoning MCQs and then walk into Part B having barely sketched. It is the single most common wound in CEED preparation. that's why we pay equal or more attention to Part B drawing question while preparing our students for CEED, and that's our practice from last 6 years.
The comparison, honestly
Swipe the table sideways to see all three exams
| UCEED | NID DAT | CEED | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Degree | B.Des | B.Des and M.Des | M.Des and PhD |
| Conducted by | IIT Bombay | NID | IIT Bombay |
| 2027 exam date | 17 Jan 2027 (9 AM–12 noon) | Prelims 20 Dec 2026 | 17 Jan 2027 |
| Applications open | 1 Oct 2026 (expected) | Open now, 10 Sep – 30 Nov 2026 | 1 Oct 2026 (expected) |
| Structure | Part A (CBT) + Part B (paper), same day | Prelims, then Mains studio + interview | Part A (CBT) + Part B (paper), same day |
| Negative marking | Yes, in Part A | No | Yes, in Part A |
| What decides your rank | Part A + Part B combined | Mains only. Prelims is 0% | 25% Part A + 75% Part B |
| Approx. seats | Under 250 across accepting institutes | About 425 B.Des, 347 M.Des | Varies by institute, no central counselling |
| Application fee | ₹4,000 general; ₹2,000 for women and SC/ST/PwD | ₹3,000 general | To be confirmed on 1 Oct |
| Attempts allowed | Two, in consecutive years | Per NID's own rules, check handbook | No limit |
A word on those seat numbers. Under 250 UCEED seats. Around 425 at NID for B.Des. Meanwhile more than 20,000 candidates sat UCEED in each of the last two attempt of it. Both exams are brutally selective, and neither is the "safe" option. we have seen many students from various design coaching take 3rd route of choosing individual private colleges once they exhausted their attempts in exams.
So which one fits how you think?
Here is the honest fit I actually use with students while mentoring from 6 years.
Choose UCEED if you enjoy the problem clicks. If you can solve the folded-paper questions, mirror images, "which solid results from this cut," tessellation logic, reading a paragraph and catching what it implies, then UCEED can land you IIT Design seat.
here is catch you need to also take care of timing, You should be comfortable solving and making a decision with incomplete information that too gives time limit, which is 3 hours of exam. Students from PCM backgrounds often do well here, not because the exam is technical, but because it is structured, and PCM students are used to structured exams.
Choose NID DAT if you are happiest making things. If you have a sketchbook that is actually full. If you model in clay or cardboard for fun. If you can hold a conversation about why a chair is badly designed. Remember, your seat is decided in a studio, with materials in your hands, and in an interview where someone asks you to defend your choices. If you have passion about Indian design and culture, and interested into global design movements, That environment rewards a genuinely curious maker and silently punishes someone who memorised at design coaching.
Choose CEED if you are graduating and you think in problems. If you look at a product and instinctively start listing what is wrong with it from the user's point of view and the designer's point of view. Part B is essentially that exercise for 100 marks. I would suggest to start Prating part B drawing by first understanding your mom's kitchen, what problem she faces in kitchen, while making roti, while washing utensils, watch her, identify her pain, try to sketch the problem and solution it with improvements into products, trust me we did this from past 6 years and have seen improvements, in students sketching.
There is a pattern I have noticed over the years, and it holds more often than not. Students who spent years genuinely looking at the world, noticing typography on shop boards, wondering why a bus handle is shaped that way, tend to outperform students who prepared very hard for eight months. The observation sections are where scores separate, and observation cannot be crammed in November.
"Should I just give all of them?"
If you are in Class 12, giving both UCEED and NID DAT is reasonable and quite common. The syllabus overlap is real, roughly sixty per cent of your foundational work serves both. The costs are your time and about ₹7,000 in registration fees.
But be clear-eyed about the calendar. NID Prelims is on 20 December 2026. UCEED is on 17 January 2027. That is four weeks apart, sitting directly on top of your school pre-boards. Three simultaneous preparations in December is not a plan, it is a breakdown waiting to happen.
My honest advice: pick one as your primary and treat the second as a serious secondary, not an equal. And decide now, in September, not in November when the panic sets in.
One practical note, since NID's window is already open. Applications close 30 November 2026, with a short correction window from 1 to 3 December. Programme selection (B.Des or M.Des) cannot be changed after submission, not even in the correction window. Fill that field slowly.
A last thought
I want to push back on the phrase "which is easier" one final time.
Every year I meet a student who chose an exam because a blogs and some WhatsApp dude said it was the softer target, prepared for it dutifully, and did badly, because the exam was testing a skills they had never built. Meanwhile the thing they were naturally excellent at was being tested next door. so one advice don take any exam lightly, don't be in the influence of anyone who has cracked it, or mentoring on WhatsApp or reddit. your situation and their situation might be different.
These three exams are not ranked by difficulty. They are sorted by temperament. Find out which one is asking for what you already are, and then go at it properly.
If you are unsure which that is, crawl the previous year paper of each. Untimed, honestly, no looking up answers. You will know by the end of the week.
Have a question about your own profile and which exam fits it? Drop it in the comments. I read all of them.
All dates here are from official announcements as of September 2026. Always verify against the official brochures at uceed.iitb.ac.in, ceed.iitb.ac.in and admissions.nid.edu before you apply.
